See the Mustang that Never Hit the Production Line

June 24th, 2013

MustangConceptMore than 50 years ago, a group of designers put pencil to paper with a new kind of sports car in mind. Lee Iacocca wanted something fresh, sporty, and easy on the wallet—something for the emerging market of teenagers who simply wouldn’t settle for their grandma’s Fairlane.

What they created turned a lot of heads, but never made it past the concept stage. The drawings and early models featured sleek lines, pointed ends and a road-hugging frame. At the time, it looked like a vehicle for a new era (or from another planet).

What Do the Ford Model A and Escape Have in Common?

June 24th, 2013

Hands-Free LiftgateWhat do the Model A and the Escape have in common? True, they are both Ford vehicles. But they also have both utilized cutting-edge tailgate/liftgate technology — well, at least the Model A did back in the day! It was 1929, and the Model A used a chain-link drop-down tailgate. Then when the 1950s rolled around, the Country Squire Wagon used counterbalancing hinges with push-button open. The ‘60s were roaring, even in the liftgate world – Ford debuted the Fairlane Falcon magic liftgate that would both swing down andto the side. The Bronco saw a swinging latch, fold-up window and drop-down tailgate in 1977, followed two years later by the electronically operated roll-down rear window.

Now it’s the Escape making the most with its advancements, showcasing a history of liftgage innovation. First, a separate pneumatic liftgate and window opening in 2001, followed by the handy and downright cool technology of 2013: an available hands-free power liftgate.

Ford Explorer Charges Through Olympic National Park

June 10th, 2013

Ford Explorer in the WildWe at Borgman Ford love the outdoors. Nothing beats a summertime drive into the heart of nature, and Ford has the best cars around for exploring! Check out this article in My Ford Magazine about author Jeff Wise’s journey through Olympic National Park in a Ford Explorer.

As we press deeper into the forest, the forms around us grow taller, stranger, more deeply enveloping. Crooked limbs overhead are draped with fluorescent green moss. Massive columnlike trunks swoop up to disappear into the canopy far above. “Pound for pound, there’s three times as much life in this rain forest as you’d find in a tropical one,” says ecologist Jamie Glasgow, riding beside me in the front passenger seat. We bump over a pothole in the rutted dirt road, dodging limbs and branches. “Each tree supports several tons of moss, lichens and other living things.”

Switching to C-MAX

May 23rd, 2013

C-MAX and LyleLyle Dennis is a huge supporter of the Chevy Volt: he founded a website dedicated to the Volt, owned the eighth unit off the production line and drove it for 14,000 miles. So why did he recently make the switch from the Volt to the Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid?

“It all started really when my wife decided she wanted a Nissan Leaf to replace her SUV,” he said. “Since the Leaf could only go 75 miles, and we have three kids, I needed a car that could operate on electricity for my short commute but also have the capability for long drives with the whole family.”

This Is Why You Aren’t Allergic to Your Steering Wheel

May 23rd, 2013

Steering Wheels at Ford“We test any component that people commonly touch for more than 30 seconds.” Those are the words of Linda Schmalz, and she’s talking about the interior of your Ford. Linda, the Supervisor of Ford Core Material Engineering, works with a team of engineers to test steering wheels, seats, armrests and shifters for allergens. Those are the parts of the interior we touch the most. If you’re lucky enough not to be familiar with the term allergens, know they are usually associated with seasonal weather and rash-inducing materials.

However, Ford rigorously tests its vehicles and also installs cabin air filters that prevent airborne particles such as dust, spores, fungus and pollen from entering the vehicle. These filters also capture soot, smog and tobacco smoke. You may not even know you have one; the filter is accessed through the glove box. Ford dealers change the filters as part of the recommended maintenance for all vehicles.

The Ford Mustang is Nearly 50 Years Young!

April 5th, 2013

Can you believe the Ford Mustang will soon turn 50? That’s right – and it hasn’t missed a year of production! It had quite the debut in 1964, well beyond its game-changing performance and looks. That first year saw it join the ranks of Indy 500 pace car and also take a lead role in the James Bond flick “Goldfinger.” Steve McQueen ensured the pony car’s spot in movie history when he did “Bullitt” in 1968 (that was a 390 GT model; in 2001, the first Bullitt GT model came on the scene).

The countdown to the 50th anniversary of this very special car has now begun, and we will be doing all sorts of celebrating! That includes 50 companies selling various festive items, such as watches, Ts, a leather jacket and model cars. There will also be a special commemorative 50th anniversary logo. Stay tuned for more!
